The End of Hearing

_status:
This is a work in progress project. It will
be presented in the 2nd International
Workshop on Creative Science 2011,
25-26 July in Nottingham, UK.

_about:
Can science fiction be a design tool?
Can we employ storytelling to inform scientific and design developments?

The End of Hearing is an experimental design project exploring:
• the new role of a designer;
• the future of human hearing.

It comprises three science-fiction scena-
rios, each focusing on a certain theme
and grounded in scientific evidence.
Complemented by a set of narrative
objects and short publicity films, the
scenarios are meant to be presented
as a performance in a gallery space.

The main goal of this project is to
generate audience responses to the
issues discussed in the scenarios.
With the stories and objects staged
in the art/design context, it may be
possible to better engage the audience
with the science-fiction scenarios and
thus, evaluate the new role of the
designer,cwho becomes the facilitator
of this experimental encounter, as well
as the catalyst of an informed discourse
between the general public and the
science professionals.
